Watch Short Dramas Shows Now Feature Breakdown

Stage One: The Story Often Arrives Before the Script

When anyone shouts „action” on a short drama set, someone has already chosen which story is worth the bet. Track a few hits backward and you often come across a book at the start of the chain. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout underpins ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort released Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Some app owners also run reading businesses, so source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Meg Bush short drama Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. If there is no book to work from, writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to compress a long drama story into such scenes.

Stage Two: Casting Known Faces

On screen, the format’s economics come into view through casting. The same names keep turning up when you skim the cast lists for short series on IMDb. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was headlined by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app reaches the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios also cast with a particular viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. DramaBox keeps a production team in Los Angeles.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap says that a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format tells a similar story: it places a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. When a 70-episode series is shot in eight days, the arithmetic works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported lower numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou said it had produced for overseas markets, and original overseas productions made up 20 percent. With dubbing, a studio can reuse a finished domestic series, which means the costly shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Slicing to 60–100 Seconds

The footage gets cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite, all framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is designed around a question the next one promises to answer, because at that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Pieced together, those slivers give a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also runs official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, so the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Editors, in other words, are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Placing the Paywall

The last creative decision is commercial as well. According to TheWrap, the standard model leaves the first eight to ten episodes free. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, according to its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Coins unlock the episodes that follow, and according to ReelShort’s blog the standard cost of an episode is about 60 coins. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; alternatively, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. The price in your store may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded „unlimited coins” apps promising a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation

The camera is removed entirely in the newest production stage. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, follows Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as „Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. This title should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reports that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Beyond the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it „AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

The most obvious example of traditional studios taking notice is Fox Entertainment. Fox picked up an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, in October 2025. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater brought in a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. That a network-scale producer is committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

A Quick Look at the Production Line

Laying the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. The edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting relies on known faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who search for a „reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to summarize typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable number has been published.

Stage of production Typical time / cost What happens
Source material and scripting No public figure A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel
Cast selection No published figure Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step
Filming 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot in a vertical frame
Edit Episodes running 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
Release and the paywall First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort Viewers unlock episodes with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026
AI and animated series Costs not disclosed Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI
Studio co-productions 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) An established studio makes vertical series for an app
